What happened to Play?

The topic of play has been the center of debate among the academic community for ages, and it dates right back to Socrates. The idea of PLAY seems to belong in the eye of the beholder, or the mind of the player.  No one else understands what PLAY means to you or how you choose to play.  The big insight that we have is that you might not even know what PLAY means to you or how you show up when you PLAY.  Researchers call this phenomenon play illiteracy. Rediscovering this is what we call finding your Play DNA™.

Why don't adults play when we know it is such a vital part of being human? We were curious about this, too. According to researcher Sutton-Smith (1997), play has been slowly taken away from humans over the past 400 years. It all began when we transitioned from hunting and gathering to farming. Those long lists of chores filled up all our free time. Then when we moved from farms to factories, even young children were sent to work. It's hard to have fun at work when you might get hurt. Besides, playing required taking time off from the factory floor, and there was work to do! Society's attitudes slowly gave play a bad name: It is frivolous, a waste of time, only for lazy people, not serious, not real, and not of any use. Play is for children. There is no room for it in the life of respectable adults.

The team who created the Playsonality™ understand play is indispensable for adults and children of all ages.  It's a valuable tool for everything, including:

  • Learning, brain development, and building our emotional IQ.
  • Relaxing, having fun, and discovering the world.
  • Connecting with others, and developing empathy for ourselves and others.
  • Building resiliency, preparing for the unexpected, and lowering stress.

The list is literally endless. Play is not a waste of time, as some factory owners might have us believe. It is a vital part of developing all those human skills we need throughout our entire lives.
